| Taylor 08-16-2001 01:04 PM | Does anyone know where I can buy these online? I have bought the Brazil nuts from Nuts4U but they don't sell the Macadamia's, neither does Nutsonline. If anyone could help me out that would be great. |
| Veronica 08-16-2001 01:16 PM | Hi Taylor, I get mine here: http://www.sunorganic.com/ They also have great dried fruit (except the pineapples, too dry). Do you know how to shell the macadamias? They are a bear ! |
| Taylor 08-16-2001 01:19 PM | Thanks for the website, I'll check it out today. For the Brazil nuts I use a hammer but didn't know the macadamia's were also hard to open. How do you do it? |
| uprise 08-22-2001 09:40 PM | Hello, If you want a great source for any raw nuts in shell check out rawfood.com. Just check out the catologue, they have dried fruit and nuts that have all been dryed at less then 96 degrees, which keeps all the enzymes intact. As for opening macadamia nuts, I picked up a macadamia nut cracker while in Hawaii. If you're interested, just call (808) 572-1043. Otherwise, rawfood.com sells a nut cracker called the Krakanut. It's really nice, but super pricey, around $55. Good Luck |
| Wai 08-22-2001 11:07 PM | Hi Mike, we have no problem with links to other sites / board here, so you can safely enter: http://www.rawfood.com , so that people only need to click on the link to take a look at the site / nutcracker [ August 22, 2001: Message edited by: Wai ] |
| BrilloPad 08-23-2001 08:24 AM | That's an interesting point, aren't most dried fruits dried at high temperatures? So they're not really raw...maybe they have some dirty protein, too? |
| Veronica 08-23-2001 09:32 AM | Hi Brillo, nice to see you over here! The dried fruit I buy says "Sun dried" so I think that's ok, but if you can buy fruit where the temperature is guaranteed, even better. Good question! Mike, thanks for the info on both the nutcracker and the nuts, it would be much more convenient to buy them already shelled. I see you are a Raw Fooder, too, that's how I came to this diet! This is much better and easier to maintain for me. Hope it works out for you, too. Taylor, sorry I didn't catch your question a long time ago. To crack the macadamias, put one in an old dish towel, twist it off so you can see where the nut is, then put it on a cutting board on the floor and whack with a mallet. The towel will eventually get holes in it from the shells. Or buy Mike's nut cracker! |
| BrilloPad 08-23-2001 10:48 AM | Hi Veronica!! Good to see you again. The dried fruits I had been buying did not say sun dried or have a temperature on them, which leads me to believe that they might be heated at very high temperatures. Maybe Wai should warn people about this? The other day I found this cool machine in a store that actually dries fruits for you. YOu put whatever fruit you want inside, turn it on, and in a day they're all dried! Unfortunately I think it used high temperatures, I'm not sure though. |
| Taylor 08-23-2001 11:25 AM | Does anyone know about drying your own fruit using a dehydrator? How high does the temperature get using it and is it okay to use? |
| BrilloPad 08-23-2001 03:03 PM | Hi Taylor, The Excalibur Dehydrator page (http://www.2-life.com/excomp.htm) says it dehydrates at temperatures ranging from 85º - 145º |
| onetwothree 08-23-2001 03:20 PM | They got a bunch of different foods at rawfood.com that I'm interested to try. This spirulina stuff that they say is high in protein, is this or any of the other raw food stuff they are selling off-limits for the diet? Thanks! |
| Veronica 08-23-2001 07:17 PM | Hi Brillo, that Excalibur dehydrator is the best, I have heard, because you can select the temperature yourself, which is so important. I would love to get one, but I have no more counter space! I hope Wai gets on the thread to answer our questions about how fruits are dried. Taylor, from what I have heard, you have to keep the temperature under 104 degrees F in order not to denature protein or destroy enzymes. Someone correct me if I remember this wrong 123 - I like that site, too, what a find for us! [ August 23, 2001: Message edited by: Veronica ] |
| uprise 08-26-2001 08:52 PM | Onetwothree, I don't know what Wai thinks, but I would imagine there is no problem with anything on the web site. Everything there is without a doubt 100% raw, so feel free to eat whatever you want!! Veronica, you're temperature of 104 degrees is right on according to some researchers, but 96 degrees is the upper limit set by others. It all depends on who you believe... |
