| Del Eaton 08-14-2001 09:37 AM | Does any one know where I can find non-salt cured olives in the USA or on the internet? Thanks! (is that better, Wai?) |
| Wai 08-14-2001 12:18 PM | Hi Del, nice to see you in here! I guess the best way is to use a search engine to make a list of all thos who ship olives, and then all email them asking whether they also sell olives that are non-salt cured. The one that does sell non-salt cure olives can build quite a clientele through this board. We might form some kind of consumer group (regarding olives, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts etc.)? |
| Del Eaton 08-15-2001 02:46 PM | Wai, I did a search already but came up with nothing. Today I did another search and ran into your site on the search and low and behold ...I got a lead! I should be searching for oil or water cured olives! Came up with something this time! Stay tuned! Hopefully I will have the info I want soon and will pass it on to those of you that want it! Friends Del |
| Veronica 08-15-2001 05:22 PM | I want it, Del. Even Whole Foods, the best natural food chain around here, only has salt-cured olives. |
| speedy 08-16-2001 11:32 PM | You guys may want to try finding (assuming there is one nearby) an Italian market. Luckily South Philadelphia has a large Italian community and many Italian markets that have loads of olives. I found it is possible to order non-salt cured olives from places like these. I guess another option might be online? Hope this helps. |
| Veronica 08-17-2001 12:23 AM | Thanks, Seth, I never thought of that. I can go up to North Beach in SF and check! |
| Del Eaton 08-17-2001 07:43 AM | I have already checked at all my markets around here and no one has even heard of such olives. Thanks Seth for the suggestion but I don't want to have to buy raw olives and process them myself. I don't need another thing to do in the kitchen! I already have to cook for people in my family that are not following the diet! That's a friendly mad! I have found some oil-cured olives that come in a bag ( Wai said if they are in a jar they are not the right ones) no salt added! sounds good to me but so far no one answers my e-mail where I am double checking the no salt. I will probally try calling them. Going to give them a little more time. If you start looking for them yourself (at markets and internet) remember that they have to be cured just not salt cured! You need to make sure they have soaked for 2 months to decrease the level of emzyminhibitors! Stay tuned! [ August 17, 2001: Message edited by: Del ] |
| Meg 08-17-2001 09:11 AM | Thanks to all and also to Seth....I am from Philly originally and my parents still live there. I'll ask them to check out the Italian market there. Boy, I love that place. |
| sternrad941 08-17-2001 07:43 PM | meg. i'm from philly. i never thought of checking out the italian market. i might go take a look when i get some time. i really would love some olives in my salads! anyway, i'll let you know if i see any. -andrew- |
| Speedy 08-17-2001 09:58 PM | Hey Meg, that's cool. I am not really from 'Philly', but the 'burbs. However, since most people have no clue where Haverford, PA is, it's easier to say Philadelphia. The Italian market should have some things. I would start with Di Bruno Bros. I will let you know what I come across. Which market do you usually go in South Philly, Andrew? |
| SternRad941 08-18-2001 09:42 AM | seth. i know exactly where havorford is. i used to play hockey at the "skatium" (ice rink) all the time. about the italian market, i really dont know much about it except that its on 9th street (right?). so i dont have a specific place i goto or anything like that. i was just planning on walking around and trying to find a place that has non-cured olives, thats all. -andrew- |
| Del Eaton 08-21-2001 02:01 PM | Well, I found the olives but I don't want to order them because the shipping is so high! I found 7 oz oil-cured olives (no-salt added) in a bag for $3.98. Tax is also added according to where you live. The shipping is $9.95 UPS/RPS. It's back to check more sites! BTW the ones I found are at www.delallo.com if anyone is interested. |

Yes, the heart of the Italian Market is on 9th between Christian and Washington. I would try Di Bruno's and around there right on 9th, just south of Christian St. That's funny you mention Haverford Skatium. I play ice hockey games there since I was 13. However, that is in Havertown, not Haverford. Small world; for whom did you play? |
