my boyfriend is open to eating this way, but i am having a hard time explaining why he does not need much protein while still building muscle. RRM, could you please give a description of your height/wt/daily regimen and the results you have achieved while eating like this?

He is 6 ft 6 and weighs 198lbs and prefers to stay very lean, while still building muscle.
He currently drinks myoplex every morning.

Yes, protein is required to build muscles, but just as it doesn't help to pile up bricks in your living room to create a bigger house, consuming more protein than required doesn't help you to become more muscled and lean.

There are a number of factors important, and consuming enough protein is one of them.
Consuming more than enough protein, the redundant protein will be converted into sugar-like and fat-like molecules; not in extra muscles.

The planning of creating new muscle tissue, is determined by the stimulance created by exercise; by exercise, muscle cells get damaged, which stimulates the body to create more of these cells to be better able to cope with the apparent physical stress in the future.

Whether this new muscle tissue is actually created (whether 'the house will actually be build'), depends on the availability of construction materials (protein) and the availability of enough energy for the consturction processes.

Whether the creating of new muscle tissue will actually result in greater muscle mass, depends on the availability of enough energy all the time; every second that too little fats or sugars or available, muscle tissue is converted into available energy: bye bye muscles!

So, whether you succeed in creating greater lean muscle mass, firstly depends on your physical activities, of course, and depends on whether you succeed in consuming the right ratio of easy digestable sugars, fats and protein, and on whether they are ingested in small portions often enough.
Simply consuming a lot of protein may not support his wish to gain more lean muscles mass.

I'm 6 feet 3, and currently weigh 200 lbs (90 kg; lean)
At the moment I consume 250 gram fresh raw salmon or tuna daily, some bananas and mangoes, and zip from OJ (with sugar and oil added) CONSTANTLY.
The latter is essential; once you are paying very much attention to your blood sugar level, you get better in recognising the signals of a decreasing blood sugar level, and thus better in preventing the breakdown of muscle tissue, which is key to gain lean muscle weight.

Did I answer your questions?
