| herbocharged 05-05-2003 08:45 AM | Hi Wai, I am a competitive cyclist and need to take in a lot of calories while riding at high heart rates. Products with maltodextrin work the best for sustaining energy and they are usually mixed with sucrose and/or glucose. I have tried diluted juice, but it is hard to stomach at when my heart rate is ranging from 160-190bpm. The next question, what can I eat that will give me sustained energy. This is usually when I am riding at lower intensities, but want something to fill my stomach. I usually ate clif bars(oatmeal based) or fig bars(wheat). I have dried figs now and will try them this week. After the ride I consume a product called Endurox R4 (http://www9.netrition.com/enduroxr4_page.html) which has glucose to spike insulin after exercise and speed recovery. This product works better at improving recovery than anything else I have tried. Would my body be able to put this protein to use quickly being after totally tearing my muscles apart? Or would it sit in my cells. I am on your diet to help with my depression, I want to thank you as there has been a noticable improvement in my mental health. |
| SB 05-06-2003 04:16 AM | Hi, I make energy bars myself, they are great for intensive bike rides. here is the recipe: 1 cup of nuts (walnuts or pecan) shelled by hand 1 cup of raisins 1/2 cup of dates 2-4 tablespoons of coconut flakes (dried) or fresh coconut (grated). Put everything in a strong blender (make sure your blender is strong enough to grind the nuts, some cheaper models cannot do that). you can add a little water or honey if the mixture is too dry. Make little balls or bars and roll them through coconut flakes. Keep them in the fridge (they will be good for 14 days). Hope this helps! |
| herbocharged 05-06-2003 10:51 AM | Thanks SB I'll try the bars. Yesterday I drank diluted apple juice on the bike, and it went down fine. But I want to now if it is ok to take gel packs that contain brown rice syrup. I'm not so much concerned about the acne(which has dissipated to a large extent), but my depression(which has disappeared from my life.) The other thing I need to find out is if endurox would be ok after hard efforts, in order to recover. Does anyone have any suggestions for a recovery drink. The goal is to spike your insulin and send the nutrients into your muscles. Also you want to mop up free radicals in your cells. |
| Wai 05-10-2003 01:14 PM | quote:it is sugars what you need, indeed pure or in fluid form When RRM does some very intense exercising, he simply mixes pure sugar with some hot water (to disolve the sugar), and a few drops of oil (which make your stomach more tolerant) maybe you can experiment with how many drops of OJ you can add to that as well quote:dried figs contain quite some fiber, so that may be a problem if the exercise intensity is too high you can use the same sugar-fluid, but add a bit more oil; the less intense exercise, the more oil you should add it is up to you to experiment with how many drops (or even spoons) of oil you can add given a certain intensity of exercise quote:especially after having been extremely active, many muscle cells have been destroyed, and lots of free amino acids and energy for rebuilding cells are required the product is so effective because glucose is immediately conversed into glycogen and stored in your glycogen depots, which gives your muscles a powerful feeling Also, the insulin stimulates the uptake of amino acids to build new muscle cells it however contains whey protein concentrate, which has a low protein quality quote:you know what would be better? Taking a sugar-dilution (sodium, potassium and antioxydants added maybe) in combination with (liquid) free amino acids that are more in line with your amino acid requirements (have you checked out http://www.13.waisays.com/protein.htm for the amino acid info?) quote:that is great news quote:yes, that is okay |
