| Achig 03-20-2003 04:14 PM | Wai (or RRM): I read about how radioactive iodine is the greatest distant danger from nuclear realeases (like Chernobyl accident and some atomic fallout were) because the Thyroid collects and concentrates it (leading to loss of Thyroid function from tumor growth on it, or perhaps much worse). Fortunately, we read saturating the Thyroid with Iodine from KI (Potassium Iodide), by consuming about 65mg (.065 grams) KI a day for perhaps a few weeks (because the half life (~8 days) elimintates nearly all of it from the environment in about a month) provides great protection from this (specificaly and only). The "side effects" of consuming this large of a dosage of Iodine are supposedly not bad or little for most people, I read, but I wonder how bad it would be to consume this quantity for long periods, like this, as a precaution at various times (fallout events thousands of miles away can cary enough to be harmful). Achig P.S. Notes To Readers: Elemental Iodine (tinctures, etc.) is very posionous (or toxic) and not a means of protection. Children and younger people are much more vunerable (according to age) to radioactive iodine. Two main exposure routes to radioactive Iodine are inhalation, and consmuning food (milk, fresh, concentrates cow consumption of it) with it. |
| Wai 03-21-2003 02:21 PM | quote:the adverse effects of this "protection" may overshadow the risks it protects you from (unless you are exposed to nuclear fall out) luckily you can have your body checked for radioactive iodine exposure i would strongly advice against taking the potassium iodide just as i would strongly advice against taking chemotherapy if you don't know whether you have cancer, or not |
