| engesongwok 03-09-2003 03:57 PM | I have some questions reguarding colon health. In the section "Food Causing Constipation", it is stated: "Because excessive fiber (from cereals, beans or vegetables) causes tiny wounds in your bowels. That's also why 'they' put fiber from trees or bushes in laxatives; the bowels want to get rid of this damaging fiber, and therefore try to lose them as fast as possible. But of course, this will make your bowels age much faster. And maybe you need a plastic bag when you’re older." I met someone recently that had/has Crohn's disease. He is a vegan, and doesn't eat any wheat products at all. However, he does steam veggies. I am impressed that at least one site says that milk, grains and soy are bad for this problem. Very good supporting evidence perhaps for some of your statements. http://www.nutramed.com/crohns/crohns_alphaenf.htm It does also state that egg protein is bad. I am not sure if this is the white or if it can be from the yolk. Do you make any claim for this diet preventing colon problems in a normal health person, or is this purely speculation? Your statement about needing a bag in the future seems a little bit extreme. I certainly hope not, as I have eaten plenty of veggies believing that they were good for me. |

The longer the exposure, the higher the risk, but even life-term heavy smokers may never get lung cancer at all you are still young, right? Most people don't need a plastic bag until old age, having followed a standard diet all their life |
| engesongwok 03-16-2003 04:55 PM | I am 38. However, everyone tells me that I look 12-15 years younger. I have always been concerned about diet, and health and at times fitness. However, some of the information I have accepted as good nutrition may have been. A friend tells me that he is frustrated at how there is always new information coming out about diet. During his life,(he is 73 years young)he has seen many reversals of opinion about diet and excercise. He says he just wants to throw his hands up in the air, and just eat what tastes good. Just because there is always a new 'diet of the month'. He is always telling me that he has always eaten just a regular diet consisting of the four basic food groups. I have noticed that he eats almost everything cooked. (and cooked to a soft mash) He says he has never had a problem with depression, acne, or any major health problem. He also says that he has never heard of anyone having any of these problems identified with wheat. The exception is that he has told me that he had high cholestrol. He tried some dietary modification (extremely low fat and reduced calories) and nothing happened, dash it all!(he is British)So, he went back to eating his regular foods and started taking medication. I guess that is the choice that people make. I certainly hope that I don't have any problems in the future with my colon or anything else. I certainly have abused my body enough as it is. I feel grateful for the information and the perspective that you present. I follow the basic diet about 80% of the time. I do feel much better. But when I vary too much from the diet I find that my energy level drops, and I start to get moody and have a difficult time sleeping. So, there must be something to the diet. thanks! |
| Sanna 06-03-2003 05:25 AM | my cousin is 18 years old and she has been using laxatives (daily, I believe) for maybe a year or half a year to prevent weight gain (she likes to eat a lot of bad stuff) and to get her bowels moving... I tried to convince her to stop but she says it can't be that bad. It's obvious she doesn't know the facts. What can I tell her? What do laxatives contain (other than rough fibers from wood)? I really care about her, want to help. |
| moydodyr 06-03-2003 11:03 AM | quote:Man, EVERYTHING is bad for you, in one way or another. Even water. You drink too much water, and it washes salt away from cells. This can actually kill you if you keep going. Dont worry bout it, what do you want to do, live forever? What are you gonna do when you are 90 anyway, sit on a couch in a nursing home and drool? Life aint fun when you are old. Why make it too long? Its like that guy in US who researches longevity and found that the more you eat, the faster you age. He is like 70 years old and is starving himself to live longer. Looks like a bag of bones and skin. He says "its ok, I just have to consciously think when I walk. Lift right leg, then lift left leg." Man, I am thinking if I have to look like him to live long, I'd rather be DEAD. Sorry, I am just a bit cynical today ![]() |
| moydodyr 06-03-2003 11:12 AM | quote:Emm, maybe use exercise instead of laxatives? You know, swimming, voleyball, cycling, etc... will get her a great body too. Athletic chicks have magnificent butts and tummies ![]() |
| Wai 06-06-2003 03:59 PM | unless you lay in bed all day (like in the hospital), constipation is not caused by a lack of exercise |
| Natascha 06-06-2003 04:28 PM | Sanna wrote: quote:Many 'natural' laxatives contain sennabeans (not sure if it's the right English word..). These beans are highly laxative, but also VERY addictive. Addictive in the sense that your bowels get lazy because of the use of these beans; by using them so often (every day is really WAY too often in my opinion) it might cause her to not being able to do without them (bowels are moving less and less) AND to needing much more of it the longer she takes them. Just like all other drugs. Good luck! |
