I am a 22 year old male and about two years ago, I decided to try a pretty standard vegan diet, consisting mostly of whole-wheat, soy and vegetables. My reaction to the diet over a period of about 4 or 5 months consisted of digestive problems, irratability, dry skin, acne(not severe and consisting mostly of white-heads around the mouth) and diffuse hair loss. I switched to your diet about 9 months ago and virtually all of the problems, with the exception of the hair loss, cleared up. The acne stopped within about half a week. What I mean by the hairloss not clearing up is that my density stopped decreasing after starting your diet, but it has never improved either. I have seen several dermatologists and an endocrinologist and no one has been able to figure it out. I am pretty sure that the problem was caused by the change of a diet and not heredity because the hair loss is not in a pattern and the hair loss stopped once I stopped eating the soy, wheat, etc. I never have read you addressing a similar issue on your site or your board, but your knowledge of nutrition has impressed me so much that I figured you might have an answer or a resource. Any input would be appreciated, but I understand if your time does not allow you to answer this.

Hi, rjfnyu!

I had a similar query to Wai. I was shedding a lot of hair while on the diet. While I had previously been shedding a lot of hair already, it increased when I started to switch to the strict diet. Wai shed a light on my predicament by asking if I was experiencing any stress. I said, "Yes, Acne!". Kidding aside, stress does contribute to hair loss (especially if it's appearing as sparse patches called alopetia/alopecia). My job largely causes much of my stress. Diet-wise, not eating enough fresh, raw egg yolks also contributed to my shedding hair. Now that I have increased my intake of fresh, raw egg yolks, get enough sleep, meditate and shampoo my hair only every other day-- sometimes every other two days, my hair has been staying where it's supposed to: on my head. Sure, I still shed hair, but it's at the normal rate now. Granted, my hair is still thin but now I know that the way to achieving healthy, bouncy, shiny hair is the same as achieving healthy, radiant, clear skin: a healthy, nutritious diet patterned after Wai's.

I hope this helps a bit. My experience might be totally different from yours but I just wanted to share what I've learned from being on the diet over time. Visit Diet in General and the thread Diet and Hair where Wai touches on the relationship between the two.

hi rjfnyu,

Do you eat fresh raw egg yolks or fresh raw fish regularly?
They contain essential nutrients (also essential for your hair) that plant foods do not contain.
