AuthorTopic: Sick from fish?

Yesterday at noon I had raw fish for the first time. It tasted wonderful. This morning I feel sick at my stomach, like I ate some bad food, although it's much more mild than that. The fish was a red tuna filet that I bought at Wild Oats whole foods supermarket, and they say the red tuna is flown in daily from Hawaii. I ate 2 ounces. So is it that I'm just not used to the bacteria, or was the fish not fresh enough?

Should I start with smaller amounts and build up, like with egg yolks?

I was concerned about eating a filet because in your book you specify buying whole fish as that's the only way one can check for freshness, but on the bulletin board you said it was okay to buy salmon filets.

Hmmm. If it would be too much bacteria, you would feel sick in your colon; you would have the runs (diarrhea), or in worse cases: fever, headache and chills.
Did you vomit?
experience abdominal pains?

When you feel sick in your stomach the next morning, it means that there is something not (completely) digested yet still remaining in your stomach. This can easily happen if you ingest the oil that comes with canned fish for example, but from raw fish?

Did you ever eat fish before? (non-raw)

No, I didn't vomit or have abdominal pains, just some nausea.

My digestion in general tends not to be very good, I think.

I've eaten cooked fish tons of times, though not in the last year. Never had a problem.

Do you think I should keep trying with the raw fish, perhaps starting with smaller amounts, or just stick with egg yolks?

Did you eat anything with the fish or within 2 hours before or after eating the fish? I think that could make a difference as to how well you digest fish. I am not even sure what combines with fish or what could inhibit digestion.

Whenever I eat fish, I always make sure that I haven't eaten anything for a few hours before hand. Also that I am really hungry, and specifically for fish.

Yeah, I had some tomato, cucumber and a little avocado blended in a blender just before the fish. I'd want to have something with it if I'm not going to eat for three hours afterwards.

I'd also had juice and oil 1/2 hour before.

Sorry, my mistake! It wasn't the fish after all, it was a medication that I tried for the first time that night.

Yes, medication can make a difference in how you feel. Some medications say to take with food, some say to take on an empty stomach. Some even say to take with milk. I am not sure what you can sub for milk if you need to take that type of medication.
