Wai,

I've been reading some internet articles about the mercury contents of fish. What do you think about it? Is it safe to consume raw fish daily, even with the possibility of mercury poisoning?

Thanks,
Judy

Judy,

I'm sorry, but Wai is off for a few weeks.
Yes, whether cooked or not (cooking does NOT destroy these harmful ingredients) fish can contain mercury, just as meat and eggs can contain antibiotic residues, and fruits can contain pesticides. (and the same goes for grains, vegetables etc.)
Should we therefore not consume any animal food and fruits? We need to eat something.
At least, raw foods do not contain oxysterols, trans fatty acids, beta-carbolines and mutagenic heterocyclic amines, and thus, consuming raw foods is always healthier.

Of course, when you have the money and are in the position to chose, then you should chose those raw foods that do not contain pesticides, antibiotic residues and mercury. When you are in such a position, you can have all your food checked for harmful substances.
But for most of us, consuming raw foods only is already expensive enough, and, health (and acne) wise, an enormous improvement.

PS I will soon move this thread to the "diet in general" forum, because this topic is not specific for the sample diet.
