Hey Wai,

Ok my question is concerning apple seeds. There is alot of contradictory material out there regarding whether or not apple seeds are harmful to the body. Well, i'm asking because I love juicing and occasionally I juice apples -- many times I'm too lazy to unseed the apples -- so I just slice, dice, and juice. Was wondering if I should change that habit.

There are documents that state the beneficial aspects of apple seeds, yet I would think that would only refer to truly organic apples. I have also heard by word of mouth that apple seeds contain all the chemical residues that the apple contacted due to conventional farming methods. I have also heard that it would take alotta apple seeds to have an effect on you, and so generally juicing four or six apples won't do any harm.

Just interested in hearing what your thoughts are.

God bless!

Okay, my take about fruit-seeds.
By nature we generally eat the fruits without chewing on the seeds / pips / stones. And these seeds are generally protected against digestion. The reason:
Having their fruits consumed by animals (and humans) is the tactic of the fruit-trees to spread their seeds; the seeds generally remain undamaged and leave the body with the feces. And where the animals / humans poop, that is where the fruit trees have their seeds [planted.
That is why the fruit trees make their fruits taste so wonderful; it is their tactic to spread their seeds.
Also, to prevent these seeds from being destroyed by the consumer, these seeds are in some way protected:
- by toxic substances that are contained in the seeds (which also make the seeds taste bitter), which prevents the consumer from biting on the seeds OR
- by their size; they are either too big (stones in peaches) or too small (kiwis, strawberries) to be destroyed by chewing
- by being contained in a very slippery substance, so that they slip away the moment the fruit is opened by the consumer.

Whatever its specific tactic; unlike the fruits, seeds are not designed to be consumed, and thus they may contain multiple substances that are (mildly) toxic / enzyminhibitors.

And like with almost all (mildly) toxic substances, you can make drugs out of them. And since drugs can be beneficial in specific diseases, there are health claims involved regarding the properties of these seed-constituents.
But, like one should never take drugs 'to prevent disease', one should not eat foods that are not meant for human consumption.

If I were you, I would always remove all seeds / pips / stones, from all fruits.

I don't believe this to be true.
By far the biggest part of all the chemicals the fruit has contacted, remain on the skin / peel. (that is why one should always peel all fruits; washing doesn't help)

Wai, you said:

Does that include tomatoes?

the good thing about tomato seeds is that they are so slippery, and aren't digested, that they cannot do any harm to your intestines
you shouldn't chew on them

what about kiwi?
aren't the little pips destroyed by chewing?
and how can I eat grapes...they're so small, if the skin and the stones need to be removed there's going to be little left

no, they aren't
just try
and even if you manage to chew on one, you will taste the bitterness (toxins generally taste bitter), which tells you that you usually don't taste this

in percentage, the volume of pips and skin is not higher than that of other fruits
it is just that the pips are so small, but yes, you can perfectly spit out the pips (and peel off the skin)
but i agree that it is much work for such a small fruit (and that is why i hardly ever eat them)
