okay, so wai reccomends that walking is the best form of exercise. that means no more strength training. i can understand that. but ive always been into health and longevity, and so i dont know how much exercise i really need to maintain my maximum physical health with exercise. whenever i go on my treadmill, i prefer to run and walk. i run too because it helps to let go of stress much quicker, and doesnt take as long. i stretch afterwards. so here are the questions that i would like to know about:

1. what type of exercise is good for maximum health and physical fitness?

2. walking is aerobic, but aerobic will burn off muscle mass over time. yet strength training is not good. so what should i do about muscle?

3. how much muscle is too much? do people with more muscle mass live shorter lives than those with almost none?

4. is cardio health really important? if so, can walking increase my cardio health as much as vigorous aerobics like running or joggin?

pheww...sorry i asked a lot of questions. its okay if u cant answer all of them.u see, ive stopped exercising COMPLETELY ever since i read ur writings about exercise. it got me so confused, [Confused] since the whole time i thought what i currently was doing(some strength training, walk/run, and streching) was doing me good(it feels like it!) [Wink] in fact, if all i did was walk, i wouldn't feel satisfied.plus, ive heard that a complete fitness routine has apply aspects to flexibility, the heart, and the muscles.

any HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

these are the conclusions I came up with

1)one that is not very intense but is moderately active not extremely hard for short periods of time.

2)walking could be considered aerobic but a lot less aerobic than running less stress, can do fast walking longer than intense running.

what should you do about muscle?walking is not that intense that you will lose muscle so walk
and if you feel like doing strength training do weight training that is not so intense and stressful.

3)you cannot have too much muscle mass.
do people with more muscle mass live shorter lives than those with almost none?
Depends on how they got all that muscle mass if they trained real hard with real heavy weights that's a lot of stress and they might live less longer possibly than somebody who naturally has a lot of muscle mass and does not put a lot of stress on his/her body.

4)being able to run a mile real fast does not mean you are healthy it means you put your body through stress to get their.walking which is moderate activity is sufficient IMO.

I hope I helped some if other people think I am wrong you can comment.

If you don't know the answer, you first need to analyze your definitions, because that is where you get confused.
"maximum physical health"
What is that?
Is there ONE definition?
No.
Health depends on multiple factors. So, you can never become healthy through exercise.
A better question would be:
"what type of exercise is most healthy for my body?"
That again, depends.
As you have mentioned, there are different 'health reasons' for starting exercise. And they may need different types of exercise.
If you think that a trained heart is healthy, you need aerobic exercises.
If you think that a higher muscle volume is healthy, you need muscle building exercises.
If you think that de-stressing is healthy, you need yoga-kind of exercises.
etc.
etc.

So, I can only tell you what exercise will fit your needs.
Personally, I do think that yoga-kind of exercises have no negative side effects.
Aerobic exercises, for example, increase your heart volume, but they also accelerate the aging of heart cells.

2. walking is aerobic
no, running is. Not walking.

quote:
what should i do about muscle?
that depends on how you want to shape your muscles.

quote:
3. how much muscle is too much?
that depends on what you want.

Yes, because more muscle mass requires a higher energy metabolism, which accelerates the aging of your body.

4. is cardio health really important?
that depends on what you want. If you want a big, muscled heart, you need to train it, by cardio exercises.
But, the more intensively trained, the more the aging is accelerated.

No. luckily.

that is a bit radical, and unecessary.
Stretching for example, is very healthy. It reduces physical stress due to waste substances and helps to maintain muscle health.
Muscle exercises can also be beneficial where it comes to shaping your body as you want it.

what is complete? how intense should the exercises be? how much loading of the muscles? how much loading of the heart?
Stretching increases flexibility, not muscle exercises. Cardio exercises increase heart volume.
Muscle exercises increase muscle volume (and decrease muscle flexibility)
