I want to share my own brief experience with Wai's eating recommendations and how they relate to my personal efforts to lose some weight. For those who are trying to shed a few pounds, my story may be interesting.

To start with the basics, I am 48 years old, male, 6'-0" tall. On July 8, 2002, I weighed 247 lbs. At that time, I discovered Wai's website, and it was about then that I started a shift over to her food recommendations. I have not been 100% faithful to her preachings as you will see, but I estimate that 90% of what I eat is acceptable. As of this date my weight is 231 lbs which is a loss of 16 lbs over a three month period. It has been a slow gradual weight loss, but it is nonetheless steady. I am satisfied with the progress. My goal is to be 185 lbs. so there will be most likely another year of losing weight. Even if I reach that goal, I will continue to eat the healthy choices of Wai's diet. In essence these eating habits will replace my old habits.

My typical daily food choices are:

Breakfast: Large glass of orange juice, 3 fresh fruits such as bananna, apple, pear, peach, plums; small handful of walnuts or brazil nuts, or piece of fresh coconut; 4 or 5 dried dates.

Lunch: vegetable salad with olive oil, or, 3 or 4 more fruits.

Dinner: Cooked squash/tomato/red pepper saute, 6 oz cooked salmon, swordfish, or tuna; or, 3 oz fresh raw tuna. small handful of nuts, 10 oil-drenched olives.

Daily snacks: dates, nuts, more fruit. I try to avoid going heavy on the nuts.

I also eat about 3 avocados per week and maybe 3-4 raw egg yolks per week. Everything varies...some days I eat quite a bit, and on other days, I hardly eat half of what I should. Basically, I eat whatever I want and try to stick to the recommendations of 4 lbs of fruit daily.

I haven't been 100% faithful. I may cheat with a little ice cream at night, or if the fish is extra fresh, I may double the portion to 12 oz. I haven't been eating as much raw fish as I should. There are other small no-no's, but all in all, I'm following her plan.

I have been religiously faithful to the goal of eliminating processed foods. In the past, it was no big deal for me to eat a family size bag of flavored nachos in one sitting, or a box of crackers with cream cheese while watching television in the evening. After consuming the entire bag, I would sit there and wonder why I kept munching even though I felt stuffed. Those bouts have ENDED...to the point where the thought of eating anything out of a box is revolting! This fact alone has especially surprised me because I have lived my entire life with the sin of binge eating. Wai's writings opened my eyes to the fact that the food additives are in fact addictive. Trust me, stick to her plan and this horrible disease will go away. It took me about six weeks to get to the point where I have no desire to eat processed snacks.

I can't say everything has been perfectly rosy. There was a 7-8 day stretch where I had diarrhea that was beginning to be a cause for concern. During that time I was eating large quantities of fresh pears. I cut back on them and it cleared on its own, and I never really got to the bottom of the cause. Other than that, I have felt excellent in terms of well-being, energy levels, etc. I have returned to eating one pear per day and there hasn't been a problem since.

At the present time, I estimate that I eat in the range of 1400-1600 calories per day as an average. But the interesting part about this, is that I am not consciously worrying about whether I am eating too much or not. I eat whenever I am hungry. When I feel satisfied, I don't bother eating anything. I suppose that if I am lucky enough to hit my desired goal, I will have to force myself to eat more. Now that a "good" problem, eh?

I will try to give periodic updates to my progress. Best regards to all....

Hi Salm,

Great results..
I think that you're underestimating the calories you eat.. If you really ate 1600 calories a day, you would feel hungry most of the time..

I think you forgot to add the olive oil calories and the nuts.. These are very high in calories..

And if you really eat only 1600 calories a day, just eat more.. You really don't need to eat less calories to loose weight.. Just eat enough until you feel satisfied and the pounds will still come off.

Also be sure to eat some fat after your fruit snacks.. Nuts are ok for that or a bite of the salad with olive oil..

Some people loose weight faster if they eat more fat, even though that sounds unbelievable..

If you eat the fruits without the fats, your blood sugar levels will fluctuate too much, which will inhibit your body to burn fat as fuel..

Good luck,

Ed,

I think you are right Ed. I did some quick addition of a typical daily food intake:

olive oil.......200 calories
nuts............300
10 fruits......1000
6 oz. fish......300
misc............200
Total..........2000

I thought I was eating less. I think everybody who tries to lose weight think that they eat less than they actually do, lol.

Looking at it another way, if you lose 16 lb. in 90 days, thats 0.17 lbs per day. If 3500 calories equals 1 lb., then (3500 * 0.17) = 622 calories per day less than what is needed daily to maintain a steady weight. This of course would vary from person to person, but you get the picture.

I definitely don't feel hungry, and the weight loss hasn't been steady. I hit "plateaus" for maybe two weeks at a time, then suddenly drop 3 or 4 lbs. over a two day stretch until I hit the next plateau. I weigh myself twice a day, and always is fluctuating in 2-3 lb range around the "plateau" until the breakout happens.

Sometimes its frustrating when I do everything right for 2 weeks and there is no weight loss, but so far, I have managed to keep losing. At this point I feel confident that if I "stay the course" my weight will keep coming down.

Losing weight slowly is the best way, because that way your body finds to need to object; there obviously is not a lack of the right foods; it is just that 'lost' fat is not replaced by new fat. And that is no problem for your body as long as you are overweight.

Losing weight rapidly, means consuming less energy than required (for all kind of body functions), and your body will probably object, and start increasing your appetite and hold on to your fat depots as much as possible, since 'obviously' there is a lack of the proper foods.
