Wai,

Where does water fit into all this? I remember you had written that sometimes hormones are the sole cause of acne and that if the case is such, then the diet would not be much of a help for hormone induced acne. Would drinking 8 glasses of water do anything to prevent acne? How does water fit into:
(1) the prevention of food induced acne, and
(2) hormone induced acne?

Thanks,
Judy

You need water to deport the dirty protein, damaged protein remainders, nitrogen (ureum), salt etc.
It doesn't matter whether this water is ingested by drinking low mineral water or consuming fruits / juices.

But even in those cases, the diet will reduce the severity of the acne to some extend.

It works just as well as 8 glasses of orange juice (OJ is better, because water does not contain vitamins or energy)

It doesn't. Water cannot prevent the cause of acne, it can maximally decrease the effects of this cause a bit. (dirty protein and salt in the skin cause acne; the water helps to deport these substances a bit, to some extend)

It doesn't; the water cannot undo the influence of the hormones to any extend.

Wai,

If my acne is 100% hormone induced, does that mean it's "impossible" for me to get clear skin? What should I do?

Thanks,
Judy

In hormone induced acne, the hormones cause your skin to produce much sebum, and make the skin retain too much water, which pinches off sebum canals.
Thus, even in hormone induced acne, the water-attracting properties of 'dirty' protein and salt will aggravate your acne.
But yes, if your acne is hormone induced, the diet will work to some extend, but not sufficiently.
In hormone induced acne, your hormone levels may be abnormal (which can be addressed with hormone replacement therapies), but it may also 'just' be due to elevated sensitivity of hormone receptors (which one cannot address with drugs / hormones)

Do you think your acne is hormone induced?

Studies have shown that high levels of DHT are linked to acne. Testosterone is partially converted to DHT. Strangely, diet low in carbs have tended to diminish DHT levels with significant results on acne... But these are only studies and i belive that Wai's experience is even more reliable.
Pumpkin seed and saw palmetto are known for inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into DHT by blocking the 5-alpha reductase enzyme.
It would be interesting to try. I would if I weren't a man and if I had acne. DHT is important in men for the errection though it's responsible for baldness and prostate enlargement.

Actually, I don't think that is strange;
Testosterone and DHT are also responsible for reproduction. And if the blood glucose levels are lower, this means, for the body, that one is underfed. And when underfed, one should not reproduce, since there obviously is too little of the right foods available to feed new youngs.
The same thing happens in women that eat too little (anorexia) or exercise too much (professional athletes); they often stop menstruating.

Acne is caused by the combination of 2 factors:
- retaining water
- producing much sebum
If one of these is absent, you will have no acne. So, if the sebum production is sufficiently lowered by lower levels of specific hormones, you will not have acne.

So, yes, undereating can eliminate acne.

sorry...i dont know MUCH but i'll have to disagree on this one..I know quite a few people whos acne has dramatically changed from consuming large amounts of water...sometimes with lemon juice..i started drinking it and my face became smoother after a few days.i dont drink much thought because i dont like it!

in other words:
water retention is part of the cause of acne, and the substances that cause water retention, can more readily be deported when sufficient water is consumed; the more water available, the more efficient this process cantake place (but it does not prevent the influx of new 'dirty' protein and salt)
whether this water comes from bottled water or juice, is not that important
