Greetings!
I'm new here and just discovered this interesting book yesterday. I'm thinking of trying this diet. My acne isn't severe, but I've never had great skin, either. I always have a few blemishes and rarely feel like I can go without wearing some type of makeup. I have lots of blackheads that I've had since I was a teenager (now I'm 31). I have these all over my nose. I get other, smaller pimples on my chin, jaw line, cheeks and back/shoulders and I went through a period in my late teens/early twenties when I got those painful cysts.

I have been taking birth control pills for almost 9 years and many people say they control acne. I can't tell - I've still had breakouts all this time, although since I became a vegetarian a couple years ago, I've noticed my skin getting better.

If I get more breakouts due to stopping the pill I will try this diet. Either way, I'm taking the advice of adding more fresh fruit to my diet and I'm ordering some unshelled Brazil nuts. I'm curious as to what is causing my acne, but I suspect it's diet more than hormones.

Another problem I have is touching my face alot. When I get a pimple I tend to mess with it and that makes it worse.

So I have 2 questions:
Wai, your book is terrific and I've read most of it, but didn't see a topic disucssing cosmetics. I apologize if I missed it. I did read the parts about not using moisturizers. I've heard many people say that wearing cosmetics can cause acne and certain kinds of make up are of course better than others. I've tried to stick to a cleansing plan and it seems to be helping (I'm using Clinique) but I wanted your opinion on this.

My second question is about how to care for a pimple when it occurs. Leave it alone? Apply a topical ointment? What is best?

Thanks!

Sorry...I just realized there was a "Skincare" board and I should have posted there.

chrys, as you have noticed, your thread has been moved...

they may work because they may decrease the level of those hormones that stimulate the production of sebum, but since this is individually different (your hormone levels, and the response to those administered hormones), they also may not work, or even have adverse effects

in general, becoming a vegetarian means ingesting a bit less protein

they actually dont
once you have eliminated your acne by adjusting your diet, you will see that you can put on any make up without breaking out
lots of correlations are found with acne, but they can never be properly investigated if you cant eliminate your acne totally and lastingly by eliminating the suspected culprit (eg wearing no make up anymore doesnt cure your acne)

seems?
it eliminates your acne, or not
acne is not caused from the outside, and cannot be prevented from the outside, unless you use harsh product that attacks your sebum production (which is unwise, regarding skin health)

what exactly does the product claim (how does it work)?

Thanks Wai,
The Clinique program only "seems" to be helping in that I haven't been using it long enough to know for sure. They make products for different skin types and the customer has a consultation with them to determine which type is best. I have tried so many different types of products and this system, when I use it every day, has had the best results so far. I notice fewer breakouts.

But after considering what you have said about acne not starting from the outside, so you can't prevent it from the outside, I'm beginning to question all the different types of cleansing that are available. I'm mainly concerned with removing my makeup and having my skin healthy - not too dry or too oily. Clinique has a 3-step program (their products don't contain fragrance, but they are far from perfect) and it is soap, then "clarifying lotion" (which is not a lotion at all but more like a toner or astringent [sp?]) and then a moisturizer, which I very rarely use. I also sometimes use their "night treatment gel" which is salicylic (sp?) acid. Sometimes I use benzoyl peroxide (sp?) on zits to try and make them disappear faster.

Of course, when and if I make the decision to go on this diet I will stop using these products.

Thanks again,
Christy

Then you only need a makeup remover and something that prevents dehydration of the skin, and also prevents overproduction of oil: applying oil to the skin.
A moisturizer (I know, you hardly use it) readily aggravates your acne, by causing water retention in the true skin.
