| Sanna 01-30-2003 06:12 PM | what is the best way for removing hair for women? (armpits/legs/bikini area)??? I shave (in the shower, no shaving cream) but it leaves my skin a bit irritated, causes tiny wounds (armpits/bikini area) and ingrown hairs sometimes. Plus it has to be done so often.. Waxing? I know nothing about waxing...is it bad in some way and can I do it myself? I wouldn't go for laser etc.....(sounds dangerous) Will I just stick to shaving?Any experiences? |

| Giedre 02-01-2003 07:12 PM | Wai, what do you think about the epilators? I was just about to by a new one, so your advice would be very helpful ![]() |
| Wai 02-04-2003 01:59 PM | well, if your skin has no problem with it, go ahead! my skin just doesn't like them Before buying one, have you ever used one? |
| Giedre 02-07-2003 06:27 PM | I don't think anyone's skin could possilbly like an epilator, because the hair removal is unnatural itself and this method is the most drastic one Yes, I've had an epilator, found it more efficient than shaving and cheaper than waxing, but it is definitely not a nice procedure. Actually I think that probably it would be best to start shaving, even if you have to make it much more often. |

Plucking, epilators and waxing are all definitely damaging to the skin but with fine soft hair the damage is much less than with coarse tough hair that needs doing often. Anything that is painful (except possibly a few sensitive areas like a man's testicles) is damaging to the body and the redness of the skin after waxing etc shows that free radicals are being formed. Waxing tricks the body's pain receptors so it feels less painful than an epilator but is just as damaging. These plucking methods are the most likely to cause ingrowing hairs and bumps. Shaving is safer but can still cause ingrowing hairs especially in certain areas like the groin. Chemical methods like Immac have not caused me any ingrowing hairs and give a better result than shaving but with tough hair the skin can be damaged. On the legs this can be minimised by taking a cold bath for 5 minutes before application to cool the skin, also warm the aerosol to 40C in hand hot water then the hair which you want to dissolve will be attacked much more than the skin. Totally safe but not giving a very good result is to use hair clippers set to 3mm (one eighth inch) you can even do this with pubic hair which can be very itchy with shaving. Hope this is useful.
