| Author | Topic: flax oil as moisturizer? |
| makodancer 01-12-2003 01:08 PM | ok. I am totally new to this board and am sure I could find what I'm looking for but there is so much to read!!! I am wondering... (1) is flax is the same thing as linseed?....(2) is it a safe moisturizer if you have acne?.....and (3) how do you use it? do you add it directly to the skin or dilute it.... how much is needed..... how often do i apply it.......etc! Please, any advice would be great as commercial moisturizers give me bad break-outs. thanks, mako |
| RRM 01-12-2003 01:34 PM | Hello Mako, welcome to this board. Regualr moisturizers make you break out because they contain water-attracting molecules that need to 'moisturize' your skin by retaining water. But, these chemicals sink eventually from the outer skin to the true skin, attracting water in the true skin. And this indeed causes the pinching off of sebum canals, and thus acne. quote:Yes, they are the same, though it might be that flax seed is a specific linseed (genetically modified?) quote:It is not realy a moisturizer; better: it prevents dehydration, instead of having to undo the dehydration (moisturizers). I don't know whether it is safe for you, because it has an unusual fatty acid composition (largely linolenic acid), and your skin may react 'allergically'. But, you can try The vitamin E contents are not too high (too much vitamin E accelerates shedding (and thus aging) of the skin). quote:I use it after every time I've washed my face / taken a shower /bath, because it puts a protective layer on your skin. It is best to not towel your skin totally dry, then put a few drops of oil on your hand, and smear this over your skin, so that it mixes with the remaining water. It is up to how dry your skin is that it needs oil. So, the dryer your skin, the more oil you need. But, be careful in the beginning, because your skin may react allergically to specific oils. (which is individually different) RRM |
| makodancer 01-12-2003 03:46 PM | Thanks for all the info. I have been spot applying lavender essential oil for almost 2 weeks and saw great imrovement (very few new zits) however, the all-over quality of my face is still dehydrated. (my skin is a usually flakey, dry skin, however it often becomes very greasy - depends on the day, depends where on my face, etc) I used flax oil for one day and i got a new zit the next day. I don't know if the two are connected because i was told it takes up to three weeks to form a zit, which i doubt. |
| Wai 01-13-2003 12:40 PM | are you on the acne sample diet? |
| makodancer 01-13-2003 01:55 PM | i have not tried the sample diet yet. My diet has always been typical american (high fat/sugar) However i started working with a naturopath last week and we are planning to do a three week detox diet. Followed by carefully reintegrating certain foods to observe for any allergies. I'll be starting this detox diet next week. |
| makodancer 01-20-2003 02:57 PM | i think flax is making my acne worse. Does anyone else have trouble with flax and use a different oil to moisturize with? Any recommendations would be helpful! |
| Wai 01-20-2003 02:58 PM | As long as you haven't succesfully eliminated ALL possible culprits first, you can find a correlation with anything, and you can NEVER be sure... that is why the sample diet... |
| makodancer 01-21-2003 11:52 AM | could it be the quality of the flax oil? I've never bought flax oil before. The label says "certified organic, fresh pressed, unrefined" This all sounded good to me. I keep it in the refrigerator, but there are flaky, clumpy chunks of white stuff floating around in it and lots of sediment. Is this normal? Should i shake it before i use it. Or is my refrigerator too cold? These may sound like silly questions but I'm completely clueless. |
| Wai 01-21-2003 02:38 PM | like I said, when you are clueless, you should first eliminate ALL possible culprits. It does not make any sense to pick on one unknown aspect and ignoring all the others; it wount help you a bit... (The flax oil is NOT adviced...) |
| Debilitor 05-09-2003 01:46 PM | Wai, I'm using jojoba oil right now to moisturize, but I want to try something else. How about flax seed oil? Can I just break open one of those capsules and apply it? And how about emu oil? Thanks |
| Wai 05-09-2003 01:47 PM | please read this thread... |
