Dear Wai,

I was using MAC's Studio Fix, which my skin did not agree with. I am now using La Bella Donna's products, which are made up of natural minerals, specifically:

Micronized Titanium Dioxide - non-chemical sun block (SPF 15)

Iron Oxides - the source of colour

Bismuth Oxychloride - anti-inflammatory properties

Zinc Oxide - anti-inflammatory properties (soothing to the skin)

I know you had concerns about some of these products, do you think these products are bad for the body?

Can you suggest some make up brands, that are good, also ones that have a wide range of colors for darke skined people.

Thank you so much.

Also I read the threads on moisturizers, are you saying that you have found success with walnut oil (should this be virgin?) and virgin coconut oil. Also what should we use as a make-up remover (can you name some products), should it be the same oil we moisturize with?

I use walnut oil under the foundation, otherwise my skin feels tight and dry. I am currently using Max Factor facefinity foundation, and it also contains titanium dioxide, is that a problem? I know Wai said something about it..
but I can't find any make up that doesn't contain bad ingredients...
please help me to finally find the best make up brand! I have fair skin. (scandinavian)

I also clean my face with walnut oil and water. All the make up comes off nicely. I would never use anything else to clean my skin. This is the only way my skin stays soft and free of pimples and dryness.

I'm sorry, Wai is off for a few weeks, but I will ask Wai to read your posts, because I know too little about make up.
Please have a little patience ...

“Natural” does not mean “good”. Many toxins are both natural and highly poisonous.
Titanium dioxide, iron oxides, oxychloride and zinc oxide all have pro-oxidative properties (which includes antibacterial properties indeed), which accelerates the aging of your skin.
Make sure to chose a make up that contains the least of those harmful ingredients. (compare labels)

Black Opal has the widest range of colours, with green, yellow and red undertones, for all colors, going from yellow Chinese going to African dark skin. BUT, since very recently, Black Opal also contains titanium dioxide, chromium oxide and iron oxides, which is unacceptable. [Mad]

Fashion Fair, the oldest known make up for dark skin, has all the colours, but is not the best quality, which depends on in what country you buy them (e.g. in The Netherlands they are old and of poor quality, while in Paris / London, just as in the Sates, the have the latest products of Fashion Fair.

Nouba has also all sorts of briiight colours, and a smaller range of make up base for dark skin; can be found in most German speaking countries.
Helene Rubinstein was the first Western make up brand that had make up foundations for dark skin in the sixties and early seventies. So, again, here you can find all colours for light brown skin to medium dark.

YSL; In the second part of the eighties Yves Saint Laurent came with a line especially for the dark skin. The famous African ‘princess’ Kadeesha was ‘the face’ for this campaign. But, you have to take care when using YSL if you have a dark skin, because with his make up, most dark skins look ‘purple’.

Chanel; If your skin is caramel brown, or chocolate with a caramel based skin tone, then there are about 4 different Chanel colours that you can use. With Chanel you also have to take care, because Chanel has a tendency of making the skin of white AND darker skinned people look pink, beige and purple.

Guerlain is perfect for the older skin. Here you can find about 5 different colour ranges for dark skin, but again, be aware of the ‘purple glow’.

Marbert; another one that has a few different colours for the dark skin. The undertone here is red, so, watch out when you chose a colour; be sure that the colour matches your skin colour perfectly. If not, you will walk around with a reddish face.

Shu-Uemura / Nobura, is one of the finest make up ateliers of the world. It is one of the most precise brands when it comes to colourisation of different skin tones. It was founded by a group of the best Japanese make up artists of that time (the early eighties). They have yellow, green undertones for their foundations, including pure yellow and green that a darker skin can mix with a bases that might be too beige or too pink. It is not easy to find though, but I know that you can find it in Amsterdam, London, New York, LA and Tokyo, and its expensive.

MAC; another brand, Canadian based, that comes from a group of Canadian make up artists. It has gained its reputation in the last few years because of the Music channels and especially the black music industry. The likes of Little Kim, Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige, Destiny’s Child, Tony Braxton, etc. etc. have had their make up styled by them over the last years. The heavy make up that you can see on the faces of most of the kids on the Music channels, black and white, come from MAC. You might go “whoopy” right now, but do not forget that we are talking about TV and movie-make up. In daily life, MAC causes rashes, especially for the black skin, and it has a beige and grey undertone.

Last, but not least: Iman;
The undisputed black queen of couture, fashion, shows, etc. founded her own brand a few years ago. And if you don’t trust any of the other brands, then at least you know that you can trust a dark skinned model coming out with her own make up brand.

Of course, there are more make up brands …

There is good make up for you in every make up store; the make up world is centred around the white, fair skin. So, if anything is easy, regarding make up, then it is to find good make up for the fair skin. You don’t need to find THE best, just one that suits you well. Compare labels, and try the make up that contains the lowest levels of harmful ingredients (and the proper skin tone, of course).

Thank you so much for this information. As an African American woman, sometimes it is hard finding real quality make-up that has a broad range of colors.

I keep on hearing about the dangers of talc. Should I try to avoid talc in make-up products. I notice at some of the higher-end counters, they proudly state that their makd-up is "talc free".

Also, can you please, pretty please, just give me some good brand names of the following (my skin is dark - normal texture):

a cleasner - for when I am traveling and unable to juice a cucumber.
moisturizer
makeup remover

Lastly, I did go to the Body Shop for the rose oil, but it appears that the one in the US may have something different, as this one contained other ingredients. Is this the one you use? Should I get it.

Thanks much.

Oops, one more question. I have acne, only on one side of my face. I have tried changing pillows, sleeping on my back, & keeping my hair off my face. Do you have any suggestions? Have you ever heard of this before. The doctor said that it worsened because I was given cortizone to help an allergic hive break-out on my stomach and back. It's been almost 4 months and my skin isn't back. HELP!!!! [Frown]

Dear Wai,

Here are a couple of sites that will give you a little info on talc. Though, I have read about carcinogenic aspects of talc for many years in several different articles.

Yes

Rosewater; it comes in small botlles that you can take with you.

... moisturizer
You should not use a moisturizer; they contain small proteteins that aree absorbded into the skin, where they attract water, which is the 'moisturizing' effect.
The only right thing to do, is to prevent dehydration, not to force it to retain more water.
To prevent dehydration, you need some oil on your skin.

... makeup remover
It should be one with mild properties, that doesn't dehydrate your skin. There are not specific brands that are okay only; In general, the more expensive ones are the better ones.

They always also contain water and some other ingredients. What other ingredients does this specific rosewater contain?
I think the rosewater from the Body Shop is the same everywhere.
If the other ingredients are not harmful, it is, besides cucumber juice, the best that you can use to cleanse your face.

Yes, it happens to more acne patients.
The secretion of sebum is locally different (more on your face, neck and shoulders). In some people the production of sebum is higher at one side of the face than at the other side, and that is where you get your acne. It happens.
Have you tried the 100% strict diet to clear your face first?

Yes, cortisone injections can impair your internal cortisol production for quite some time... [Mad]
The cortisone / cortisol breaks down big protein molecules into lots of smaller protein molecules, which attract more water than the big one, which causes water retention, which causes teh pinching off of sebum canals.
