| sunny 10-12-2002 11:55 AM | Hi! It is so reassuring to know that I'm not alone in this rollercoaster acne ride. It is even more encouraging and empowering to know that someone cares so much as to do a research on the relationship between diet and acne. Wai, you deserve the Nobel prize for health and nutrition. I am on the fifth day on the sample diet. I had actually been on it before and followed it in its two-week course. I should have been more awed by the results then: pimples literally shrivelled up and died, my chubby cheeks took a more chiseled look and my skin was oh-so-soft. However, instead of experimenting with munch foods, I went back to my old eating habits with a vengeance. For three months I binged. Not only did I gain a substantial amount of weight, my acne came back in all its glory. The temptation to eat all the wrong food was stronger than ever. Thinking that I no longer had the strength to do the sample diet again, I went back to taking Herpanacine, a natural skin supplement targetting acne, rosacea, herpes and other skin problems developed by Dr. Wayne Diamond (USA). A couple of weeks ago I started taking Herpanacine again. However, it didn't help much when my period came around. My face turned so oily and broke out with six sizable pimples. I knew I HAD to go back on the sample diet. With more resolve than ever, I dove into Wai's sample diet and now I'm on my fifth day. Today, my skin is getting softer. The six pimples are just starting to dry-up. I know I will need more than two weeks of being on the diet until my face clears up 100%. Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing. I'm glad to know that there are people who still stick to integrity and labor for the truth. For free. Cheers to Wai, to clear skin, and to all of us who are in this together! moi, sunny ![]() |
| Wai 10-12-2002 12:51 PM | Welcome back, sunny! How long did it take to be able to see results the first time? |
| sunny 01-31-2003 12:06 AM | quote:Hi, Wai! I'm so sorry it took me awhile to respond to your October post. I completely missed it. To answer your question, the first time I tried the sample diet I immediately saw results after five days. By results I mean soft, smoother skin, over-all lessened redness, big pimples drying up. Unfortunately, 12 days into the diet, I broke down and started eating all the wrong foods. It was pretty sad considering that my pimples, though much inflamed, were few and were beginning to fade. When I strayed away from the first time I was on the diet, my acne really got worse, as if my skin turned really sensitive from all the foods I had previously stayed away from. So, after three months of much struggle, I went back on the diet. I had a couple of bad starts but eventually stuck to it and lasted for 18 days. The soft skin came back but since I had more pimples then, my skin did not get totally clear-- not even after 18 days of being so strict. More pimples still developed, though not the cystic kind. Then I got sick with colds and cough and my resolve to stick to the diet went down the drain. I ate much cooked protein and soups. This was around the start of winter 2002. I wanted to do the diet again. However, with the Holiday season looming ahead, I told myself forget it, do the diet after Christmas and the New Year celebrations. I did not want to set myself up for failure. Ironically, and I think there must be a reason for this, I only had very few break-outs during the Holidays. In fact, my right cheek not only started to get clearer and clearer but the scars were also healing. I ate a lot of chicken, turkey, stuffing, chocolate, drank soda and all those typical Holiday food. My left cheek, on the other hand, was still covered with scars but only had two pretty small but noticeable pimples. And I must admit, I got sucked into using Elicina cream for scars for three weeks, which DID NOT really do anything except made my pores look a little bigger. I threw the jar away after finding out that a number of its ingredients were in the Top 10 list of unwanted/dangerous chemicals in skincare. Nevertheless, my skin was clearer than it had ever been-- without being on the strict diet. BUT, my face was bloated and I was steadily gaining weight (those Holiday pounds!). I did not feel good inside inspite of a seemingly clearer face. My face was heavy and I knew it was the water retention. I was puzzled, and still am, that I did not break out like crazy. All I could come up as an explanation is that because of the cold weather, my skin was not oily enough, or my sebum production was low, thus not conducive for acne. Care to shed some light? Anyway, at the second week of January 2003, I resolved to start the strict diet again. About 8 days into it, I was breaking out with small pus-filled pimples. This was about the time I was also stressing about my car problems. I was at the auto body shop when I got really, really hungry having had only a mug of pineapple-orange juice (fresh, made by moi)with olive oil in the morning. Too hungry to care, I had some french fries with ketchup and some ranch dressing. Needless to say, I paid dearly for the car-- and for the fries. Pimples dotted the curve just below my right cheekbone two days later. I had to start the diet all over again. Today is the 14th day of my second shot at the diet for this year. And, bless the woman's hormones, I also have my monthly visitor. About a week ago, I saw the first symptoms of PMS: three huge, highly inflamed pimples that looked like a dome of clustered whiteheads sprouted on my face. I apologize for being so explicitly gross. Two are starting to dry now. More red pimples are still surfacing. On a more positive note, my skin seems to glow; over-all it looks less mottled and is softer. I can't wait for my period to be over. For sure, I will still continue with the strict diet. More and more friends and family now know about the way I eat. In the beginning, I found it hard to admit that I was doing it to get my acne under control. I just didn't want so many questions, speculations, doubts and skepticism thrown my away. But, I thought, I'm doing this diet for me and if I let other people's opinions put me down then I'll suffer from acne forever. My friends are really supportive and would even provide fruits whenever we would have gatherings at their place. Gosh, so much for my reply. I must have written a novel. Take your time. Thank you so much for your time and patience. Sunny, ![]() |
| Wai 02-01-2003 02:49 PM | quote:the production of sebum is VERY much subject to hormones, and thus hormonal changes. Especially women go through hormone changes, not just your monthly cycle, but also longer cycles. I guess your sebum production must have been low... Please keep us updated, okay? |
| sunny 02-02-2003 03:24 AM | quote:What could have made my sebum production low around December? What was going on with my hormones? I have to pay closer attention to my cycles. Today is the fourth day of my period, and should be the last. I am on day 16th of the strict diet. My back has at least seven new cystic acne. My chest has two red pimples and my face has one fresh cystic acne. I am not under real stress and the only diversion I've done from the strict diet was one day I had a lettuce and carrot salad diet covered with extra virgin olive oil and a spritz of lemon (the cystic acne on my face was already visible at this time). Perhaps it's also because I have been staying up late-- 1:30 am at the latest-- and would eat some fruit with olive oil at about midnight whenever I crave for someting to eat. Hmmmmmmmmm, my other hunch is that I may not be eating enough and my body's eating redundant protein, thus, acne galore. Poor skin. I've forgotten what it's like to be totally clean and clear. Anyway, I'm hanging in there. I'll get there someday. We all will. Thanks, Sunny ![]() |
| Wai 02-04-2003 01:54 PM | quote: in everybody our hormone levels are subject to cycles; that is normal, and that is why all acne patients have better and worse periods... quote:. yes, going to bed earlier is essential; the 'cleaning hormones' start working at night, unless you are awake at that time... quote:yes, that is another possible culprit (it is not just redundant protein that you are eating up, but also muscle protein) Please keep us posted!!! |
| sunny 02-04-2003 02:26 PM | Today marks the 18th day of my being on the strict diet. My menstrual period also officially ends today. I still have a cold but it's at its last stages. The seven cystic acne I felt on my back have receded and some are drying out. The two on my chest are still very red and painful (I wonder if these have anything to do with being sick. They look like fever blisters). The cystic acne on my face did not turn out to be cystic at all. As the mound developed, it was actually 3 pimples sprouting side by side. This one's starting to dry up as well. I have 5 new relatively small pimples starting to come out but are not painful nor deep and do not contain pus yet. Sigh, we will be having a very big family gathering two weeks from now and I am really tempted to have a facial done-- not that it will get rid of my acne, but just to smoothen my skin for a just a little bit and I will be able to apply make-up more evenly. Also, since I have had a cold, mucus just drips down my throat and, well, gets ingested. Does this also cause breakouts? Thanks so much! Sunny ![]() |
| sunny 02-06-2003 03:38 PM | I'm on day 20 of the diet. I'm about 95% clear--pimples on my face, chest and back are continuing to dry up. My myriads of scars are very slowly healing. What I'm most happy about is that I no longer have that flushed look. My mom has also observed that my face no longer looks as red, as if I were blushing all the time. Though I'm not 100% clear yet, I ate one piece of oatmeal-raisin cookie yesterday. I'll probably see effects later in the day or tomorrow. |

| sunny 02-08-2003 08:11 PM | Hi! Day 22: 1 oatmeal-raisin cookie eaten on Day 19 resulted in 3 small slightly inflammed pimples two days later, and are now drying-up. I've also started experimenting with eating unsalted corn tortilla chips with 3 grams of protein for every 15 chips (sounds like a lot). It's made of stone ground corn, hi-oleic safflower oil, water, and a trace of lime. I've eaten approximately 15 chips every day for three days now. Not good. I should have skipped three days before eating them again. I have 3 relatively small, inflammed pimples (painful) and 2 slightly infammed ones (not as painful). All of them developing right beside a scar of an old pimple or a just-receding inflammation. Time to hold off on the chips for the rest of the week ahead! On a positive note, more and more tiny ice-pick scars are fading away; I couldn't even tell exactly where they once were. I'm also learning to ignore the stinging sensation of the olive oil as it slides down my throat. Thanks, Sunny ![]() |
| john 02-10-2003 05:09 PM | >I've also started experimenting with eating >unsalted corn tortilla chips with 3 grams of >protein for every 15 chips (sounds like a lot). I find that baked chips are less problematic than fried (probably due to lower cooking temperature, and less dirty protein). You can also slice up corn tortillas into chips, place them on a baking sheet, and bake them at 300 for 15 minutes or so. Before cooking you can season with salt, lime, or whatever. Keep in mind that if you consume NO salt at all, and then decide to consume some your body may react to the suddent change in salt intake and it may cause acne. That same person may be capable of maintaining a constant reasonable salt intake (not excessive) without getting acne. As far as the chips, it could very well be the fried dirty protein, not the salt. In deviations from diet it is wise for me to stick to BAKED foods, not fried. |
| sunny 02-12-2003 08:06 PM | Hi, John! Yes, it could be the oil from the fried chips that produced the inflammations, which have dried up, thank goodness. As for making my own chips, it's easier for me to go to a store and buy a bag of Guiltless Gourmet unsalted baked corn tortilla chips. I have switched to baked since discovering it at an organic store. I have had no new breakouts since. I have been very wary about eating foods with salt, cooked or processed. I'm scared that if I do, it will be acne farm all over again. I simply shudder at the thought. I do realize that there will come a time when I'll have to try munching cooked/processed food that are proteinacous and salted to see how my skin reacts. Thanks for the tip on how to bake corn chips. Perhaps one day, I'll try making my own. Thanks, Sunny ![]() |
| Wai 02-13-2003 12:14 PM | quote:no, not the oil itself, but the food FRIED in that oil; the temperatures involved in frying are much higher as in baking... |
| sunny 02-13-2003 11:56 PM | Thanks for the clarification, Wai! I should know this by now. Thanks, Sunny ![]() |
