Hi Wai,
I have read part of your website (waisays.com) and want to following your 'diet suggestions'.

I have got a problem here... [Confused]

I myself am a vegeterian. I think I will try raw egg yolk (maybe later) but not raw fish. The latter is tooo expensive for me too. For Brazil nuts, I ate some before and I like them, but I can't afford buying them as a part of a daily diet (I live in Hong Kong). [Frown]

My question is, can walnuts, or other nuts, replace Brazil nuts? [Confused] It is said in your site that walnuts are very good too, and it is more affordable for me here.

Thanks and looking forward to your reply.

Consuming no animal food at all, you definitely need the Brazil nuts, and then they cannot be replaced by walnuts, simply because the protein quality of walnuts and other nuts is far less good than that of Brazil nuts, so that you need the Brazil nuts for their protein quality.

But... if you DO eat egg yolks regularly (or the fish), then you don't need any nuts at all, actually.

So, as long as that you are not eating egg yolks, you definitely need the Brazil nuts daily (and supplementary vitamin B12 and a litle bit vitamin D).
But when you do eat the egg yolks, there is no worry about any nutrients anymore.

Hi again Wai,

[Smile] Thanks very much for your prompt reply [Smile]

I have read you reply in another thread about Brazil nuts that below 20 nuts daily is ok. So if I eat neither fish nor egg yolks, what's the min. no. of nuts I need? Is it determined by my daily protien requirement?

Apart from this, how can one tell, other than from supplier's claim, that the Brazil nuts are raw or not? Those I bought from supermarket before had a crack on the shell... does this mean they had been roasted / heated?

Thanks very much.

I read your page about Brazil nuts. You said don't eat it if its color is yellow. I have got a question. What about if just the very centre of the nut is a bit yellow but other part is ivory? What the problem for the yellow color (does it mean it is not raw)?

Thanks!

One handful of Brazil nuts (about 35 gram net weight) is enough.
Yes, it is solely about protein; if you don't eat fish or yolks, you need the Brazil nuts solely because of their protein quality. If you do eat yolks / fish, then other nuts can be as valuable as Brazil nuts.
Why don't you eat yolks or fish?

Brazil nuts are raw when they come IN the (whole, non-cracked) shell.
A crack on the shell? Just as with pistachios?

It is not about raw versus non-raw.
If the center is yellow, they are old. But, you can have old nuts mixed with new nuts, so you should check more of them to make sure.
When fat goes rancid, it tastes awful. And because of the high fat percentage, rancid Brazil nuts taste awful, and can make your stomach sick.
Bad fats are unhealthy, so you better eat fresh nuts.

For fish, it was an incident some time ago. I came across the kitchen door of a Japanese food restaurant (chain store) in a local shopping centre for toilet. The fishy smell was so bad that I just wanted to throw up. And every time my mom buys fresh fish from market, the smell in the kitchen makes me sick. Besides, sashimi is also too expensive for me too. (I am living on a budget.)

For raw egg yolks, I want to try them. I live in a home that my mom cooks lunches and dinners (Breakfasts too, for my dad, while I eat fruits and drink juices [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] ). Today, I told mom to add a yolk without the bag (and your instructions too) to the just-cooked oatmeal for my lunch (just after switching off the stove)...

Three things happened:
  • I am not sure if the yolk got 'damaged' by the heat in this way (like what cooking does)
  • My mom blamed me for I being so weird.... and I really feel sorry for having upset her. [Frown]
  • The result: She mixed some egg white and a whole yolk with the oatmeal (without following the instructions). It tasted bad when it came to me. After finishing my oatmeal, I ended up throwing up and it was a very painful experience. [Frown]
I am not giving up. I am thinking about pan frying a whole egg slightly without making the yolk condense (my mom doesn’t refuse to do it and have done this before). Will this damage the yolk?
Besides this, eggs sold here are all factory eggs, I guess. I live in Hong Kong, as mentioned in another post, and there is no farm here. Chicken eggs are imported from either China or US. I think the China ones are factory eggs as it is more modernized in recent years.

It's a little narrow crack across the Brazil nut shell. The salesperson taught me to open with the tool she gave me (it's a piece of metal, about 2" x 0.5") by inserting it into the little crack and then rotating the tool.

I worry that the cracks on the shells were created by a heating/freezing process to make opening the nuts easier.

Even though it is difficult to open Brazil nuts, I instantly fell in love with these delicious nuts after I had my first taste of them some while ago. [Smile]

Sorry for the long post, and that my English is not as good as a native speaker. Many thanks. [Smile]

ehrr, did you read the 'sample diet'?
Oatmeel is not in it...
Are you doing this for acne?

If you want to do the diet, you better explain to her about the diet first. Maybe she can read it?

I'm sorry, but, with this diet, that is excluded too.
why don't you add some egg yolk to a glass of orange juice?

the same here, but that doesn't have to be a problem; you just need to check them for freshness: http://www.13.waisays.com/egg-yolk.htm

If all the nuts (no just one) contain such a crack, they are not raw...
You need nuts in a whole, completely intact shell.

There is nothing wrong with posting long posts, and your English is great!

I'm finding it difficult to find Brazil nuts or macadamia, I eat raw salmon or raw egg yolk on alternate days but would like to get some nuts into my diet to so I'm wanting to know what would be a good nut substitute.

since you eat animal food, you don't need the Brazil nuts for their protein quality, and you can eat any nut that can perfectly be consumed raw, or none.

BTW, here's a thread about where to get Brazil nuts and Macadamia nuts...
