| Taylor 09-16-2002 02:46 PM | I talked to a company today about their hulling process for seeds and their shelling process for nuts. Here's what they said: "From what we understand the mechanical hulling is like centrifical force - the machinery may reach a temperature of about 120 degrees" "Our inshell macadamias are considered raw - they are air dried for about 7-10 days at a temperature of less than 110 degrees - If they are not air-dried the nut meat is like coconut - it is very moist and does not separate from the inside of the shell" So my question is will this low heat cause the protein in the nuts and seeds to become dirty protein. Please let us know Wai if you have any thoughts about this. Thanks |

If it is Fahrenheit, then that is about 49 degrees Celcius, right? If so, that is a low temperature indeed, and will cause NO harm to the protein. |
| Carolyn 09-25-2002 02:11 PM | my mother bought lots of nut packets (the studentenfutter master-mix)of a certain brand, the site of which is - www.lorenz-snackworld.de On the packet it does not say how the nuts were prepared, but it does say keep away from heat. Does this mean the nuts are raw? Besides the shopkeeper said they are handshelled, but it dosent say anything on the packet, nor does the site say anything (to the best of my german knowledge hehehe )Does anyone know anything about these nuts? 10xps - the mix includes sultanas (unsulphurated), peanuts, cashew nuts, almonds, hazel nuts, veg fat & veg oil. I hope i can eat them cos there arent any unshelled brazil nuts availiable til December over here ![]() |
| Wai 09-26-2002 05:02 AM | quote:No. Heat simply decreases the shelf life of nuts, especially when they are not contained in the shell anymore. quote:they NEVER are hand-shelled; that is waaaay to expensive. The shopkeeper obviously says anything to sell something. If they were really hand shelled, if would say so in capitals on the package, and they would cost over 10 fold more. quote:so, this mix is an absolute no-no. quote:http://www.nutsonline.com |
