| MxPx 10-05-2002 08:00 PM | How many brazil nuts do you people eat a day. I eat like around 30 or so. Is this to many??? |
| Wai 10-06-2002 01:12 PM | The most important issue is: are these nuts really raw; do you need to shell them yourself? Regarding selenium and radium intake, consuming 30 Brazil nuts (about 130 gram) every day is a bit much. Two (about 70 gram; 16 nuts), or maximally 3 handfulls a day (105 gram; 24 nuts) is safe. |
| MxPx 10-06-2002 02:09 PM | ya there raw. I bought like a 15 lb pound bag of them. The problem is that there so good. It's hard not to eat alot. |

| MxPx 10-06-2002 03:31 PM | ya..there in the shell and i shell them myself |
| Chris10astra 10-08-2002 12:30 PM | I can't seem to get enough of them lately. I eat far more than .5g to every 1g of fruit. I'm very active, so I wonder if my body knows that this is the best source of protein and is telling me to eat it? This past hour I have eaten nuts, breaking open 2 every 5-10 minutes. They're sooo good. I get on food phases, for a while I couldn't get enough bananas, then avacados, now it's oranges and Brazil nuts. I'm on my 8th day of the sample diet and my skin is better but not great. I still pick it so I think that's probably the problem. |
| Sanna 10-09-2002 03:15 AM | so you're saying it's bad to eat more than like 16 nuts? I thought it was ok to eat as much as you want. what does the excess selenium do to the body? what about the radium? are we really safe with 16 nuts a day? |
| Wai 10-10-2002 07:10 AM | quote:Yes, that is very well possible. quote:No, not at all. All I'm saying is that consuming 20 Brazil nuts or less, daily, is absolutely safe, while a higher intake may be safe too. (which is individually different) quote:In theory, it is toxic, but there are no reports of people getting intoxicated from eating Brazil nuts. In the Amazon area in Brazil, there are indigenous people that live on a diet of mainly Brazil nuts, and there are no reports of adverse health effects. The reason: selenium is a metal, and as with other metals (iron, zinc etc.), the body can very effectively adapt the absorption rate to its availability; if you consume a lot, the body lowers the absorption rate. quote:Yes, consuming 20 Brazil nuts daily is absolutely safe. All fruits by nature are radioactive to a small extend. The Amazon area in Brazil (where the Brazil nuts come from) is much more radioactive by nature (the barium). This is not the same as the radioactivity from hospital (or army) equipment, which is more 'concentrated', but they measure it as being the same. And in regards to the official safe levels of barium, one should not conume more than 24 Brazil nuts a day. If you are not always consuming that much Brazil nuts, you can also eat more occasionally. |
