AuthorTopic: are shelled nuts okay?

Hello all, another great day (I think).
I went to three pretty good stores today (organic, alternative etc) but no one had shelled Brazil nuts so I got some unshelled ones. Should I put off eating them and order some shelled nuts online? The nuts look so good, lol.
Thanks

"Shelled nuts" are nuts without the shell. "Unshelled nuts" are nuts that are still contained in their shell. I guess you meant to buy unshelled nuts...

The nuts that no longer are in the shell can EASILY cause acne (especially 'sandy bumps'-kind of acne)
You can hardly ever get unshelled Brazil nuts in shops. You can order a whole year supply (25 kg bag) at a local whole sale, or you can order on-line.

uhh, I think (water) chestnuts cannot be eaten raw...but maybe I'm wrong here?
Maybe you should submit 'raw chestnut' to the search engines?

I think most water chestnuts are raw...but most of them are canned as well so I guess that's a no-no.

If they are canned, they are never raw...
If you really want to eat water chestnuts, you better first check out whether they CAN be eaten raw...
Please let us know if you find something, okay?

How likely are shelled nuts to cause acne?
I've been eating raw shelled brazil nuts

Nuts that have been shelled commercially can easily cause acne.

Is it because from the heat that is used to shell the nuts?

Heat or deepfreezing, yes.

To answer the question about water chestnuts. I got them from a Chinese grocery store, they are raw and they are fantastic. All you have to do is cut off the brown skin. So sweet in flavor.

So as long as nuts are raw, they are fine right? I eat raw pistacchios, brazil nuts and walnuts - what else can i add to the list? Thanks

raw pistacchios???
Like peanuts, they are already roasted in the shell! They are not raw...

You can perfectly eat raw macadamia nuts

i found this packet of pistacchios - green and still in an intact shell - i think they are raw - the shell is split when they are heated right? these were still enclosed (and i had a hard time getting them out lol)

Not necessarily; among the half opened ones, you will always find some closed ones.
So, you need to find out first!

i am on top of the world - i just found a shop "good earth" which sells shelled nuts throughout the year, cracked mechanically (without heat); separated from the shells by floating them in water; dried using warm air and finally packed - NUTS I AM COMING LOL [Big Grin] the warm air wouldnt have harmed the nuts right wai?

Probably not; what is the exact temperature?

Is it an online shop?

Hi, I am a Chinese myself. It is delicious. However, please note that water chestnuts are not a kind of 'nuts' by category, although they are called in this way. Their protein and fat content are much lower than those of other nuts.

Is it possible that these brazil nuts (at bulkfoods) are raw and fine to eat even if they're shelled? It says:
Brazil Nuts, Unblanched 22 pounds
Description: Shelled Natural Raw

i'm sorry, but it is not possible
commercially sold shelled nuts have NEVER been shelled by hand; it would definitely say so on the label if they were (in capital, bold characters), and they would cost you lots of more money

I just bought Brazil nuts preshelled in a bag
IS this dirty protein? I'm pretty sure they aren't fresh because they are preshelled and more tannish than yellow. Are they still safe to eat under this diet?

If you are going to consume brazil nuts, you need to buy the ones with the shell still intact. Nuts that have been shelled( no shell on them) have dirty protein which can cause acne.
