| Sanna 09-19-2002 05:31 AM | is watermelon really a melon? or is it related to cucumber? is it best eaten separately? I get an upset stomach sometimes when eating it...what could be the cause? I don't have any problems with other fruits. |
| Wai 09-19-2002 08:40 AM | quote:No, it really IS a melon. quote:This fruit easily causes digestion problems, and is very hard to combine with other fruits. Many high-beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A) sugary fruits don't combine well with other fruits (apricot, persimmon, papaya, loquat, tree tomatoes, mandarin), but I don't know whether the combination sugar - beta-carotene is the culprit in this, since muskmelon combines with other fruits much better (and is high in beta-carotene). |

The doctor then told me amongst other sugestions and medicines, to avoid the seeds in melon, watermelon, cucumber, guayava, even tomato and succini. It certainly helped me, and I´m very careful to get almost all the seeds out before eating. You know, sometimes melon and watermelon even have some seeds that are not fully grown, so they can be easily overseen. Hope this helps. What do you think, Wai? Ciao Karen |

This is because it is all part of the 'plan' of the fruit trees to reproduce; by making the fruits attractive to consume (sweet, nutritional), the trees can spread their seeds; after the fruit has been digested, these seeds leave the body of the animal (often miles away), to originate new trees. To make sure the seeds are not crushed, they are largely protected against being destroyed by their size (strawberries), or being contained in a very slippery substance (like in kiwis), or by containing toxic substances (peach).
