Is it ok to add purple onions to your salads?I love them and they add so much flavor to the salad. Also does anybody love the taste of olive oil. When i first starting having it, it kinda had a weird taste to it. Now havening it for 12 days i love the taste of it so much. It's so wierd.

Onions are not so good, because they may cause some indigestion; they may impair the proper digestion of other foods, which may cause acne.
Can you leave out the onions for a while?

Are green onions okay, they seem similar to chives?

but chives are only used in very small quantities, to add a bit taste. So, if you use the onion in the same small amount, it wount do much harm.
Don't eat the onions as a food.

When I was studying Acne and Diet, I heard that apparently onions and garlic improved digestion, and that especially in cold climates they had a warming effect on the body (whereas fruits have a very cooling effect on the body.)

I could tolerate consuming red onions only in the wintertime when I lived in Kansas...it felt like there was a nice furnace inside my stomach and felt almost something like a natural high (whereas I had no such reaction from white onions, red onions only.)

But now that I'm in Los Angeles, onions have a very aggrevating effect on my digestion, they feel very harsh in my system, and I dislike them.

I don't know how helpful this personal testimony is, but I find the subject interesting.

hi RawBebe,

the climate dependent tolerance is very interesting indeed. It would be even more interesting to know whether it 'still' excists; whether you would tolerate the onions, living in Kansas during the winter...
It could also be that not until later your body started to 'dislike' the onions. This happens in alsmost everyone; once we start to eat cleaner, our body will increasingly reject 'less perfect' foods; it will become increasinly 'picky'.
This actually makes more sense to me; if you offer your body the right foods all the time, and it gets 'used' to these, it will prefer the best foods over the 'less perfect' foods.

well, in colder climates there are raw vegans (who don't eat meat or eggs) who keep warm by eating root vegetables (turnips, beets, yams), and garlic and onions to keep warm.

for wai's diet, those foods aggrevate people who suffer from acne, and people keep warmer by the high amount of fat in the oil and meat.

when i started eating almost all fruit i was cold almost all of the time, when my friends were just perfectly fine or warm in the same room.

What about asafetida? (Jains often use this to get a garlic or onion flavor without having to dig in the ground)

thank you,
actually, it should be regarded as a drug / medicin (the same goes for garlic, actually), and not a normal food
the sulfur compounds (and the coumarines) inhibit your digestion

Sorry I'm a bit confused Wai, are you saying then that garlic is definitely a no go whilst on the diet? Also, can beetroot be consumed or is that another non-starter and if so, why?

not "definitely", since you may only use a few drops from squeezed garlic
but, yes, in principal, garlic contains 'active' substances that inhibit your digestion

it is a no-no
you need to cook beetroot to be able to digest it properly
beetroot contains a few substances that are enzyminhibitors (pentosanes, hexosanes, high levels of oxalic acid, nitrate, nitrite)
